Whether it be a gift for yourself, a family member or friend, nothing adds a more personal touch than a handcrafted pen. Miles has recently developed the skills and knowledge to hand-turn his own pens on his lathe, examples of which can be seen below.
‘Blanks’ or blocks of acrylic are spun at very high speeds on the lathe and tools with various different profiles are introduced to the side of the spinning blank in order to shave off material to the desired finished profile. There are a wide range of tools available, all with different cutting actions and purposes. After initial shaping, increasingly fine grits of sandpaper are used to bring the roughly finished blank up to a smooth finish. The final step is to work one’s way through special wet abrasive sanding pads that leave a scratch pattern that is invisible to the human eye. This is followed by a quick application and buff with a friction paste to leave the surface with a very high gloss polish.
The correct implementation of all these processes combine together to create a one of a kind product.
Miles’s pens come in various different colours to suit a wide range of styles and all types of pen from fountain, to rollerball and ballpoint are available. There is a product to suit every budget from those that want a stylish keyring to liven up their keys, or those who prefer the very highest customisation and quality in a pen that will catch people’s attention every time the owner is lucky enough to use it.
All these options are laid out in the catalogue below, with customisation options and general information found towards the end. Don’t hesitate to contact Miles to discuss any designs you may have in mind or if you wish to purchase one of these exquisite hand-crafted writing instruments.
